Everything seems to have been fairly quiet for this month; I haven’t seen much fluctuation in ranking at all. So since any work you do on optimisation take about 3 months before you see any effect, I’m trying to alter the linking strategies to respond to the changes that the search engines have in the pipeline.

Google has registered some very interesting patents, the main one is entitled ‘Information Retrieval Based on Historical Data’. This suggests two major changes, firstly web pages will be given a freshness rating and pages that remain fresh will be considered more relevant and hence get better ranking.

The suggestion is that freshness will be determined by two factors;
1. When the content of the page was last updated.
2. If the page is attracting or losing inbound links.

Also it looks like google is going to take into consideration how often the link clicked on as one of the main factor in determine how much weight the link has.
So a link on a page which no one ever visits and never gets update is going to be worth next to nothing. The empathises has changed to getting links on pages with good content. Also the position of the link on the page has become more important too, as there is talk of the click though rate being worked into the new algorithm.

Unfortunately this does not help with the speed that it take to get good ranking in the google, since your ranking is dependant on your pervious history it is going to take time to build this history up.

So, what can you do, well the obvious thing is to do is install the google toolbar and regularly visit your own site from other site that link to it. Also to visit any website that has good links to your site, this way that site will gain more traffic that will promote your site. Don’t just quickly flick through web pages though, because people visiting a site and quickly leaving suggest to google that the visitor has found the site irrelevant.
